The Original Bollywood Reformist!

A random thought lead me to draw parallels between the Original Bollywood Reformist Manoj Kumar and Today's Reformists Aamir Khan, Abhay Deol & Few others.

Just like Aamir Khan's film 'RDB' inspired many a youth to talk about politics and the state of law & order in the country (Jessica Candle Marche, IAC Movement etc.), two of Manoj Kumar's earliest films happened around the time of JP Movement. Yaadgaar & Upkaar both the films talked about reforms rather than patriotism, however Media manipulated and propagated both these as patriotic dramas.

Yaadgaar is a Lesser known film & the one liner description that I read somewhere sums it all up - An honest and patriotic young man learns that politicians, and the wealthy, are not.

Yaadgaar talked not just about the depletion in the quality of leadership but also about Global Warming, Nuclear Bombs & of course Family planning the hottest topic of the times!

Upkar(1967): The Farmer, The Soldier & the Urban India in the 60s

This film released in the 1960s was a great Metaphor for the lives that - The Farmer, The Soldier and the Urban India lived during the time. However, most people preferred to propogate it as 'Patriotic' - thus failing to understand the nuances of the film and ignoring the real message which was not Plastic Patriotism at all.

Interestingly the Director & Scriptwriter Manoj Kumar chose to have the Foreign Returned Indian as the chief negative character in the film, ofcourse he would have been a lot apprehensive to directly comment on the Urban Classes, since Urban India was the only audience for Hindi Films. The story talks about a Farmer who opts to join Army after the war breaks out and when he returns he finds that his Urban Brother and Uncle instead had chosen to make the best out of the War by blackmarketing etc.

This film, along with another one of Manoj Kumar's lesser known gems "Yaadgaar".. have hints about the state of politics and moral degradation that was happening around that time. 'Yaadgaar' talked about corrupt politicians and businessmen and that was year 1970, it seems nothing changed since then and it only got worst. So pathetic has been the politics ever since that we are now seeing a spurt of movements and incidents of unrest everywhere in India.

To be contd.
